OVERVIEW: The DM2A4 Seehecht (Seahake Mod 4) is a wire-guided, heavyweight torpedo developed for submarine launch against both surface ships and submarines. It features active/passive homing with fiber-optic guidance and was designed to replace older DM2-series torpedoes in German and allied submarine fleets.

DETAILS: The designation "DM" stands for "Deutsches Modell", and "A" indicates a variant within the DM2 series, with "4" representing the fourth version. Developed by Atlas Elektronik (Germany), the DM2A4 was introduced as a modular, long-range, and low-acoustic-signature torpedo with increased digital processing capabilities. It uses an electric propulsion system powered by advanced lithium-ion battery technology for extended range and quieter operation. The torpedo is equipped with conformal sonar arrays and wake homing sensors, allowing precise target discrimination in both deep and littoral waters.

The DM2A4 added a range of over 50 km, enhanced stealth through quieter propulsion and hydrodynamic casing, and a new fiber-optic guidance system replacing older copper wire. It also integrated programmable mission profiles and advanced counter-countermeasure capabilities.

TYPE: Heavyweight, wire-guided torpedo

FUNCTION: The DM2A4 uses a fiber-optic guidance link for real-time communication and control, paired with both passive and active homing modes for engaging submarines and surface warships. It can follow the target’s wake, adapt to countermeasures, and operate effectively in shallow or deep-sea environments.
